Katie Robinson
Senior Occupational Therapist, Hiya Health Labrador
Katie is a highly skilled and dedicated Occupational Therapist with over 20 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families. While Katie has a broad expertise across the lifespan, her passion lies in supporting children and young people with complex movement disabilities, particularly those with cerebral palsy. Early in her career, she developed a deep connection to this area and has since focused much of her work on providing specialized care to individuals with cerebral palsy.
Katie’s extensive training and expertise include a variety of evidence-based interventions and management strategies, such as:
- Bimanual interventions for children from infancy to late childhood, including Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)
- Assessment and intervention for upper limb function
- Static splinting for tone management and joint integrity
- Early detection of cerebral palsy using the General Movements Assessment (GMA)
- Pre and post Botox assessments and interventions for upper limb function
- Certification course in Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT)
- Active participation in national and international conferences on cerebral palsy and related conditions
- Postural management and its impact on movement and everyday functioning
- Assistive technology (AT) assessment and prescription for improved function and mobility.
Katie has a particular interest in working with children who have complex presentations, especially those classified with GMFCS levels IV and V. She is particularly focused on how restricted movement can affect a child’s access to play, toys, and social interactions with their environment and significant others. This interest is deeply tied to her commitment to supporting communication development. Katie is a strong advocate for the early integration of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, and she works closely with families to ensure these tools are seamlessly incorporated into daily routines, particularly during play.Katie is passionate about working across the entire lifespan, from birth to older adulthood. She believes that each stage of life offers valuable opportunities for engagement in meaningful activities, which are essential to living a fulfilling and purposeful life. Whether working with young children, teenagers, or older adults, Katie is committed to helping individuals thrive and achieve their potential.
Katie has extensive experience working across diverse settings, including homes, schools, day care centres, community environments, and therapy clinics. She is highly skilled in collaborating closely with key stakeholders—such as parents, teachers, other professionals, support workers, and extended family members—to foster understanding, raise awareness, and build meaningful connections with the individuals she supports. Katie is deeply committed to the belief that education, empathy, and tailored support are essential in cultivating nurturing environments where individuals can thrive, develop, and reach their full potential.
When she is not working Katie enjoys being a mum and spending time with her 2 children including attending weekend sport and finding new and fun places to explore out in nature. Katie also enjoys gardening, travel and spending time with her close friends and family in Melbourne and Tasmania.
