What is the difference between an exercise physiologist & a physiotherapist?
Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists are similar in many aspects, with both professions studying a minimum of 4 years at University to work as an Allied Health Professional across a wide range of conditions and across the lifespan. Exercise Physiologists generally have additional training in Exercise for Chronic Disease management through exercise, and are well-suited to seeing metabolic conditions.
Physiotherapists will do additional training in musculoskeletal injury assessment and management, and are well-suited to diagnose and treat acute injuries. Both Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists use Exercise and stay up-to-date with the latest science to incorporate into their treatment plans, and at Hiya Health Cleveland, our Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists work alongside each other daily and collaborate to provide the best outcomes.

Can I claim a physio appointment on medicare?
Yes, our Cleveland Clinic offers medicare rebates if you have been provided a referral under an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan by your GP. This involves a maximum of 5x Medicare-subsidised sessions per annum across allied health professionals. The quantity of sessions on the plan for respective professions will be stated on your referral, decided by the referring GP in discussion with you. Medicare referrals can be used to access Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, and Exercise Physiology services at Cleveland.
What can I expect from an initial consultation with a physiotherapist?
Your initial appointment will include a consultation with our highly trained physiotherapists to discuss your concerns and experiences. It will include a consultation to take your history, and understand your concerns, a thorough assessment, and treatment planning.
Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move, and if you are getting a specific condition assessed, it is likely the physiotherapist may want to see that area to complete the assessment or treat the region. One of our highly trained Physiotherapists will first have a thorough conversation with you; listening to your presenting concern, asking questions about your symptoms/injury, medical history, relevant work/sporting/exercise requirements and your goals of treatment. In this time, they may read and discuss any imaging or reports where relevant.
They will then perform a thorough and specific assessment of your area of concern. This may include assessing your range of movement, strength, joint integrity, and physical capacity. Once the Physiotherapist has thoroughly assessed your concern, and diagnosis, they will discuss the treatment options and best suitable plan, including the expected time to recovery and the steps required to achieve your goals.
From there, your Physiotherapist will guide you through your tailored treatment plan, utilising our excellent facilities designed to take you through your rehabilitation. The treatment program is varied depending on the condition and your goals, but may include treatments including: Injury, symptom or pain management advice Tailored exercise programming, trialled in-clinic and provided as a home/gym program Rehabilitation advice Manual therapies (including massage, joint mobilisations, manipulations, dry needling, repositioning manoeuvres for vestibular clients). Therapeutic modalities where appropriate (eg. Electrical Stimulation, TENS, blood flow restriction training) Our Physiotherapist will follow up by providing you the Exercise Program discussed (and most often practised) in clinic, and an assurance that all information from the consultation was understood, usually in the form of a follow-up email.
