Exercise Right Month 2025: The people and clients I work with move me every day.

This year for Exercise Right Month, we’ve been asked a simple question: Who moves you? Alyssa, one of our Exercise Physiologists in our Labrador Clinic answers the question:

“When people ask me what I do for a living, I tell them I help people move better, feel stronger, and live fuller lives through exercise. But this year’s Exercise Right Month asks a different question — not what moves me, but who?

The truth is, I didn’t always know I’d end up in this career. Like many kids, I grew up completely immersed in sport. Whether it was weeknights on the netball court, or weekends on the football field, I loved the physical side of it – the strategy, the discipline and the way it brought people together. But as anyone who’s spent time playing sport knows, injuries are part of the game. I had more than my fair share, and that meant plenty of time working with physiotherapist’s, sports trainers, and exercise professionals. What I realised very quickly is that they weren’t just treating my injuries – they were supporting me at some of my lowest points and helping me rebuild my confidence to get back to what I loved. That experience left a mark. It showed me how powerful the right support can be, and it made me want to be that person for someone else.

I became an Exercise Physiologist because I wanted to combine my love for sport and movement with something deeper – helping people feel strong in their own bodies again, no matter what challenges they’re facing. But over the years, I’ve realised that who moves me in this work has become just as important as why I started.

It’s the teenager who’s struggling with motivation, self-esteem, or a chronic condition and finds confidence through movement. It’s the older adult who tells me their goal is to keep walking the dog or playing with their grandkids without pain or fear of falling. It’s the NDIS participant who lights up when they achieve something they didn’t think was possible, whether it’s standing longer, lifting their arm higher, or just feeling seen and supported.

The people and clients I work with are who moves me every day. Their resilience, patience, humour and honesty are what keeps me showing up and showing up with purpose. Progress in our sessions isn’t always quick or easy. Sometimes it’s messy, emotional, and slow – but it’s real. And every small win we celebrate is built on trust, connection and a shared commitment to keep going.

My clients are the reason I do what I do. They remind me that movement is about far more than fitness. It’s about independence, identity, dignity, and quality of life. I feel incredibly privileged to be part of that journey.

Exercise Right Month is a great reminder that exercise should never be a one-size-fits-all experience. Movement looks different for everyone and that’s exactly how it should be. Whether you’re a young person managing mental health, an older adult looking to maintain independence, an athlete returning from injury, or someone navigating disability, exercise, when done right, can support you to live life on your
terms.

So, who moves me?

My clients. My community. The people who show up, despite the barriers, and keep striving toward better. They are the reason I love what I do. They are why I’m proud to be part of the team at Hiya Health. They are who move me every day.”
